The Grand Golf Performance Academy instructors teach more than just methods; they take individuals and make them better players.

Shawn Cox, Director of Golf
A member of the Professional Golfers' Association of America (PGA), Shawn is a Level 3 Titleist Performance Institute Certified Golf Fitness and Junior Instructor. Using a physical screening process to identify and isolate physical limitations, he evaluates swing technique and prescribes customized conditioning for each student, including current players on the PGA and LPGA tours.

In 2005, he received Golf Digest’s Best in State Instructor award and became the first person in Southern California to complete the PGA's specialty certification in instruction. Prior to joining The Grand Del Mar, he served as assistant head golf professional at La Jolla Country Club and Torrey Pines Municipal Golf Course, where he founded the Junior Golf Club.

Derek Uyeda, Lead Staff Instructor
Named the 2009 Southern California Section Professional Golfers' Association Teacher of the Year after receiving the award for the 2008 Teacher of the Year for the San Diego Chapter of the PGA, Derek Uyeda has specialized in state-of-the-art computerized video instruction and swing analysis since 1995.

In 2003, he was aptly listed among the top 35 golf instructors in California in Golf Digest’s “Best Teachers in Your State” 2003-2004 edition. Derek enjoys working with students of all ages and skill levels, including beginners, accomplished amateurs, collegiate players and PGA touring professionals.

Prior to joining The Grand, Derek taught all over San Diego, including a position at Pro Kids Golf Academy, where the San Diego Chapter of the PGA named him the Assistant Golf Professional of the Year in 1999 for his development of a highly successful teaching method for juniors.

Phil Rodgers, Staff Instructor
Native San Diegan Phil Rodgers is a veteran golfer who played for 22 years on the PGA Tour and six years on the Senior Tour. His extensive career highlights include being named among Golf Digest’s Top 50 Instructors every year since the list’s inception; winning the NCAA Division I Championship while playing at the University of Houston; and winning five times on the PGA Tour.

Most recently, he was inducted into the 2009 Southland Golf Hall of Fame, which lauds him as “one of the most recognized and decorated golf teachers in the world.”  Perhaps best known for competing against Bob Charles in a 36-hole playoff in the 1963 British Open, Rodgers has worked with over 100 Tour players, including Jack Nicklaus.

SAM PuttFit
Rather than making an efficient stroke, most players have to adapt to an ill-fitted putter, often purchased simply based on optics as they wade through an expanding array of brands and models. Try out several putters and receive a report comparing technique, timing, consistency and overall ratings. Then, we will bend and adjust your putter to optimum characteristics with our onsite putter loft and lie device.

To schedule your fitting, please call the Golf Shop at 858.314.1930.
